Nine days. On October 15, a Belmont picks up the Vampire Killer in a brand-new Castlevania for the first time since 2014, and she does it in Paris. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is set in 1499 and stars Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, which means the most important thing about her happened before she was born.
Spoiler warning: this post walks through the Belmont family story from the whip’s origin to the far future, and it spoils the endings of older Castlevania games, including Lament of Innocence, Dracula’s Curse, Curse of Darkness and Aria of Sorrow. It doesn’t spoil Belmont’s Curse, which isn’t out yet. Anything about Rose beyond Konami’s official details is clearly marked as our reading. Where does the Belmont story begin?
It starts in 1094 with Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, the PS2 game that gave the whole series its origin story. Leon Belmont is a knight who gives up his title to rescue his fiancée, Sara Trantoul, from the vampire Walter Bernhard. An alchemist named Rinaldo Gandolfi arms him with the Whip of Alchemy, but it isn’t strong enough on its own. In the game’s darkest turn, Sara’s soul is bound into the whip to give it the power to destroy Walter, and the Vampire Killer is born.
The real villain turns out to be Leon’s closest friend, Mathias Cronqvist. Grieving his dead wife and furious at God, Mathias used the whole affair to claim the Crimson Stone and its immortality. He becomes the vampire the world will know as Dracula. Leon walks away with the whip and a vow: the Belmonts will hunt the night for as long as their bloodline lasts.
That vow is the curse at the heart of this family. Every Belmont after Leon inherits a weapon made from a woman’s sacrifice and a war against a man who used to be family. Later games also make clear the Vampire Killer reaches its full strength only in Belmont hands, which is why it matters so much who carries it next.
Why did the world turn on the Belmonts?
By the 15th century, the people the Belmonts protected had started to fear them. The family’s power made them outsiders, and they were driven out of Wallachia. Then, in 1476, Dracula unleashed his armies across Europe, and the Church had to ask the exiled family for help.
That’s the setup for Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse on the NES, and the answer was Trevor Belmont. He didn’t fight alone. Along the way he could recruit Sypha Belnades, a sorceress whose elemental spells covered his weaknesses; Grant DaNasty, an acrobatic pirate who could climb walls; and Alucard, Dracula’s own son, who turned on his father. Trevor defeated Dracula, Alucard chose to sleep rather than live with what he’d done, and Trevor and Sypha married.
That marriage matters more than it first appears. Sypha’s magic joined the Belmont bloodline, and later Belmonts carry both the whip and an instinct for spellcraft. Rose is the first time a game puts that inheritance front and centre.
What happened in the years after Dracula’s Curse?
Killing Dracula didn’t end the damage. Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, set in 1479, shows a Europe still poisoned by his curse, with plague, violence and paranoia spreading in his absence. Its hero isn’t a Belmont at all. Hector is a Devil Forgemaster who once served Dracula and walked away, until the woman he loved, Rosaly, is executed for witchcraft, a death he blames on his former fellow forgemaster, Isaac. Trevor appears in the story, but it’s Hector’s grief that drives it.
Curse of Darkness is the key to understanding Belmont’s Curse’s title. The new game borrows from both Dracula’s Curse and Curse of Darkness, and it’s set 23 years after the first and 20 years after the second. The message is consistent across all three: Dracula doesn’t really die. His influence lingers in the land, and someone always has to clean up.
Who is Rose Belmont?
Here’s what Konami has confirmed. Rose Belmont is the daughter and successor of Trevor and Sypha, and Belmont’s Curse follows her through Paris in 1499, as a looming castle appears in the heart of the city and monsters overrun its streets. She wields the Vampire Killer for both combat and traversal, swinging across chasms and reaching heights that are otherwise out of reach, and she has a range of weapons and spells to master. Konami’s official announcement describes it as an exploration-based 2D action game.
It’s developed by Evil Empire with Konami, with Dead Cells studio Motion Twin advising; the two studios first worked with Konami on the 2023 crossover expansion Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania. The team has named Dracula’s Curse and Curse of Darkness as its story inspirations, Super Castlevania IV for the whip and Symphony of the Night for the structure, which puts it squarely in the genre covered by our Metroidvania list. It launches on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo version also planned.
Our reading: the spell system is the clearest nod to Sypha, and the Paris setting is a deliberate break. Almost every earlier Belmont fought in or around Wallachia and Transylvania. Moving the war to France says the curse has spread, which lines up with everything Curse of Darkness showed about Dracula’s lingering influence.
What comes after Rose?
Rose sits in an uncharted gap in the timeline. The next Belmont the games show us is Christopher in 1576, in Castlevania: The Adventure on the Game Boy, so there are 77 years of family history with nothing on record. After Christopher come the famous names: Simon in 1691 and 1698 (Castlevania and Simon’s Quest), Juste in 1748 (Harmony of Dissonance) and Richter in 1792 (Rondo of Blood). In 1797, Symphony of the Night hands the lead to Alucard after Richter goes missing.
After that, the Belmonts step back from the front line. In 1917 and 1944, the Vampire Killer is carried by the Morris family, a related line who can use the whip but pay a heavy price for it, as Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin show. The story’s climax comes in 1999, when Julius Belmont defeats Dracula for good and seals his castle inside an eclipse. Aria of Sorrow, set in 2035, reveals what happens to Dracula’s power after that. Every one of those future hunters, from Simon to Julius, descends from the family Rose carries forward.
Is the Netflix Castlevania series canon?
Not to the games. Netflix’s animated Castlevania loosely adapts Dracula’s Curse with its own versions of Trevor, Sypha and Alucard, and its follow-up, Nocturne, moves to Richter Belmont in revolutionary France in 1792. They’re excellent, but they’re their own continuity. Konami’s announcement for Belmont’s Curse does nod to the animated show, and both draw on the same source, so fans of the series will recognise the shape of Rose’s family. The game itself follows the games’ timeline.
The same goes for Lords of Shadow. MercurySteam’s 2010 reboot and its sequels tell a separate story with Gabriel Belmont at the centre, and nothing in them connects to Rose.
What does the lore suggest for Belmont’s Curse?
This is speculation, so treat it as such. The title points two ways at once. It echoes Dracula’s Curse and Curse of Darkness, but “Belmont’s Curse” also reads like the family’s own burden: the vow Leon made in 1094 that every descendant has to keep. A game about Trevor and Sypha’s daughter seems likely to ask what it costs to inherit that duty.
The setting raises bigger questions. Dracula was defeated in 1476, yet a castle appears in Paris in 1499. Curse of Darkness already showed that Dracula’s influence can outlive him and that people will try to use it, so the most likely villain is someone exploiting that power rather than Dracula simply returning. And with Alucard asleep since 1476, and the Belmont line’s magical side finally getting its own game, Belmont’s Curse has room to fill in a lot of what happened between Trevor and Christopher. We’ll know on October 15.
