There are surprisingly few games like this on the market in the present day. Basically, the game is a strategy game within an open world. The game might be the closest thing we'll ever get to an open-world SOCOM game as well as an open-world SEALs game. It's a huge game that's got a lot of content to consume, and it's a lot of fun to play with friends. Taking your time, aiming, focusing on accuracy, being sneaky, and enjoying yourself makes this a competitive game worth highlighting.

Technically, the game is classified as a multiplayer online game, and it is sold as such. This is a newer title on our list, but it has been updated regularly, and we anticipate that PC gamers will enjoy it at least largely thanks to its cool concept. Depending on what country you are playing, you are thrown into large-scale World War II battles with a limited squad of soldiers. As a free-to-play game, it is somewhat comparable to Battlefield. While it's not perfect, it's worth mentioning because it might be exactly where you're looking for that middle-ground level of hardcore.
ARMA 3

Over 40 weapons are available to you, most of which have many attachments that you can use to customize them. The game also offers 15 firing positions, while most games offer standing, crouching, prone, and leaning. That should at least give you an idea of what you're getting yourself into. So much so that the game incorporates an accurate star map for navigation. It really does have it all in ARMA 3. The modding community is also very active. After completing the single-player campaign, you can download custom scenario creators and use them to make your own. If you pick up ARMA, you'll have endless hours of gameplay, and it can be both tactical and exciting.
Star Wars Republic Commando

In light of how many Star Wars games there are, Republic Commando is one of the more underrated ones. In first-person, you command your troops in tactical skirmishes in the back alleys of the underbelly of all the Star Wars worlds, all while they are unique Clone Troopers with their own unique personalities and specialties. With its fun, accessible Star Wars spin, this game satisfied that itch for SOCOM and early Ghost Recon on a much deeper level. You can think of this as a prequel to The Bad Batch, the Clone Wars spinoff. You might be interested in checking out this game if you like Star Wars and Stormtroopers or Clone Troopers.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

If you've never played it, know that it's as much of a head game as it is a skill game and that it's not what you would think of as a tactical game when you think of modern Counter-Strike. There aren't many shootout games out there that do something different than Call of Duty, but this is surely one. It may seem chaotic at first, but it actually brings just the right amount of realism and emphasizes teamwork that makes for some pretty epic hardcore battles. A game in which cover fire is essential, and every decision can result in the loss of your life pretty quickly. You'll encounter enemies in open field battles, lush jungles, and the ruins of towns and cities, and shooting weapons is a blast. You can go from bigger battles to smaller ones, and there are many maps and helicopters actions if you like that type of thing. If it's the progression you like, then you'll also find a fair amount here to chew on. There have been a bunch of updates since release, so if you're just diving in now, there's a lot already built up to play and check out.
