Games Like Crusader Kings 3

Crusader Kings 3 is a massive real-time strategy game by Paradox Interactive. It offers both profound strategic complexity and a rich narrative backdrop of Medieval Age politics and diplomacy. Even though Crusader Kings 2 was regarded as the game that launched the franchise, Crusader Kings 3 is the definitive game in the series thanks to numerous improvements, tweaks, and enhanced accessibility. Here are some excellent alternatives to Crusader Kings for those who are fond of that time period and gameplay style.

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Spheres of Influence

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Spheres of Influence

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Spheres of Influence

Developer: Koei Tecmo
Genre: Wargame, Turn-Based Strategy, Tactical Role-Playing

Wait till you see Nobunaga's Ambition if you thought Crusader Kings had a difficult character management system. Though this game's character system is less focused on relationships and role-playing, they are just as important to strategic and tactical gaming as they are to immersing the player in the game's universe and making them fall in love with their samurai retainers. There are a few annoying oddities in Nobunaga's Ambition, such as a clunky UI and control method, which may distract from the overall enjoyment factor. These shortcomings, however, are insufficient to distract from the game's compelling quality and innovative strategic aspects, both of which are unprecedented in the strategy business.

Total War: Three Kingdoms

Total War: Three Kingdoms

Developer: Creative Assembly
Genre: Turn-Based Strategy, Real-Time Tactics

Total War: Three Kingdoms immerses players in the struggle of the Three Kingdoms period in Ancient China, when the Han dynasty ended and the rise of powerful warlords commenced. Crusader Kings lacks large-scale tactical battles like those found in Total War, the latter of which is what sets Total War apart. Characters have always been at the heart of Total War, but not in the same manner as Paradox's monster. Three Kingdoms is one of Creative Assembly's games that focuses on character development as well as inter-character interactions. Character interaction is not as extensive as in Crusader Kings, but it still has an influence on the player's strategy and tactics, which is rather enjoyable. Despite the fact that Creative Assembly abruptly and perplexingly halted Three Kingdoms' post-launch life cycle, leaving several problems and issues unaddressed, it remains a high-quality and creative entry in the series.

Imperator: Rome

Imperator: Rome

Developer: Paradox Development Studio
Genre: Strategy, Grand Strategy, Simulation

Though characters aren't as crucial in the game's main gameplay as they once were, they still play a significant part in establishing laws and creating the political scene across the Mediterranean. More impressively, Imperator: Rome distinguishes itself from Crusader Kings by having a strong resource and trading system, as well as a robust diplomacy feature that can actually model and support a hegemonic approach to international relations, a la the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, but without the same blood ties and dynastic struggles. Paradox should be credited for its efforts in rescuing what seemed like a flop. Like Crusader Kings, Emperator: Rome is now one of the greatest strategy games, and you should play it almost entirely for its redemption arc.

Knights of Honor

Knights of Honor

Developer: Black Sea Studios Ltd.
Genre: Strategy, Medieval, Grand Strategy, RTS, War

Taking a break from role-playing and returning to the Medieval period, Knights of Honor is perhaps the closest non-Paradox created game to Crusader Kings. Knights of Honor share a real-time approach to the strategic layer, but it also features a small-scale tactical fighting system. In Knights of Honor, character traits are used as tools to further the player's strategic goals, rather than focal points for the entire gameplay loop. The game emphasizes the political and diplomatic concerns of Medieval countries like France and the Byzantine Empire in terms of character development and representation. This contributed to the depth of the game's army recruitment and settlement construction mechanisms. In addition, Knights of Honor was unique for its time thanks to its functional and complex espionage system that made it possible to create a great deal of new gameplay options. It's an older, but equally brilliant, alternative strategy game to Crusader Kings.

Europa Universalis 4

Europa Universalis 4

Developer: Paradox Development Studio
Genre: Grand Strategy, Historical, Simulation, Economy

Taking the player back in time from the late Middle Ages up until just before the Industrial Revolution, Europa Universalis 4 is a fantastic historical sequel to Crusader Kings. In contrast to Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis 4 focuses on the exploration, exploitation, and religious turmoil that occurred throughout the period depicted in this game. There is even an advantage over Crusader Kings since it offers a great variety of countries to choose from and further motivates players to experiment. Europa Universalis 4 should be a very interesting game for players of all types of strategy games due to its sheer magnitude and intriguing scenario.

Old World

Old World

Developer: Mohawk Games
Genre: Turn-Based, Strategy

Compared to Total War or Knights of Honor, Old World's character system is a bit more functional, but still reminiscent of Crusader Kings' character system due to its extensive random event mechanic, helping shape a great storyline. Another similarity between the two games is that victory is determined by maintaining, preserving, and expanding the ruling dynasty, which can lead to lots of interesting strategic decisions. The inaccessibility of Paradox's grand strategy games is a frequent criticism, with Crusader Kings 3 being one of the rare exceptions. Old World, on the other hand, is an outlier in the category due to its badly written instructional and difficulty in learning. Old World however offers a plethora of distinct concepts and features that make it a valuable and satisfying strategy game.
